Olivier Clément on the Theotokos

She is the mother we no longer have, or never had; she is the consolation we have always sought from a woman — in vain, naturally, as a woman is also in need of consolation. She is already wholly in the Kingdom and is our help in reaching the other side. She is the ultimate synthesis, within a created person, of every tenderness and all beauty.
